How to Prep Furniture for Fusion Mineral Paint: A Step-by-Step Guide

Prepping your furniture before painting is the key to achieving a smooth, durable finish that will stand the test of time. If you're working on a beloved antique or a modern piece that needs a fresh look, proper preparation is essential. In this guide, we'll walk you through the step-by-step process of preparing your furniture for painting with Fusion Mineral Paint ensuring that your project turns out beautifully.

Step 1:
Assess the Condition of Your Furniture

Before diving into the preparation process, take a close look at the piece you intend to paint. Are there any areas of damage, such as scratches, dents, or peeling finish? Is the surface coated with wax, furniture polish, or other residues? These factors will determine the specific steps you need to take during the prep process.

**Pro Tip:** If your furniture has a glossy finish or feels greasy, there's a good chance it has been treated with wax or polish, which can prevent paint from adhering properly. This must be removed before you start painting. This is where Fusion's Odourless Solvent works wonders! Using a small amount on a cloth and wiping down your piece before you begin the cleaning process is a great idea. This "extra" step is helpful on antiques and new furniture pieces to ensure the adhesion and durability of Fusion Mineral Paint.

Step 2:

Clean Thoroughly with Fusion TSP Alternative

Cleaning your furniture is a critical step that ensures the paint will adhere properly. We recommend using Fusion TSP Alternative, a non-toxic cleaner that effectively removes dirt, grease, and grime without the need for harsh chemicals.

**How to Use Fusion TSP Alternative:**

- Mix the Fusion TSP Alternative with water according to the instructions on the bottle.

-Using a green Scotch-Brite pad, scrub the entire surface of the furniture to remove any buildup.

- Wipe down the piece with a clean, damp cloth to remove any residue.

Step 3:

Scuff Sand the Surface

Scuff sanding is the process of lightly sanding the furniture to create a slightly rough surface, or "tooth," for the paint to grip onto. This step is crucial for ensuring the durability of your paint job, especially on glossy or previously finished surfaces.

 **How to Scuff Sand:**

- Use 150 to 220 grit sandpaper for scuff sanding.

- Gently sand the entire furniture surface, focusing on areas with a glossy finish.

- Wipe away any dust with a clean, dry cloth.

**Pro Tip:** You don't need to sand down to bare wood—just enough to dull the existing finish and give the paint something to adhere to

.

**Final Prep Tips:**
