How to Clean and Restore Furniture Hardware: A Complete Guide

Cleaning furniture hardware might seem like a small detail, but it makes a big difference in how your finished piece looks. Freshly cleaned and painted knobs, pulls, and handles can instantly elevate a furniture makeover from average to stunning. Over the years, I have tried many different methods, and after plenty of trial and error, I have found a process that works every time.

Although Fusion™ Mineral Paint works beautifully on metal (it adheres well and cures to a hard, durable finish), I often skip hand-painting hardware because it is time-consuming. Instead, I go for a faster, low-effort approach that still delivers professional results.

In this guide, I’ll share my tried-and-true method for cleaning and painting hardware, including my favourite products and the steps I never skip.

Supplies You Will Need

  • Barkeeper’s Friend (my go-to metal cleaning product)

  • A container for soaking

  • An old toothbrush (for scrubbing)

  • A soft cloth

  • Spray paint in your chosen colour

  • A cardboard box with holes (to hold hardware upright while painting)

Step-by-Step: How to Clean and Paint Furniture Hardware

1. Remove the Hardware

Carefully take all the hardware off your furniture piece. Separate any screws from knobs or handles so that each part can be cleaned thoroughly.

2. Soak and Scrub

Fill a container with warm water and soak the hardware for a few minutes. Then, apply a small amount of Barkeeper’s Friend to a toothbrush and scrub away any grime, tarnish, or built-up residue. For heavily soiled hardware, repeat this step as needed.

3. Rinse and Dry

Once the hardware is clean, rinse it under running water and wipe it dry with a soft cloth. Be sure to remove all water from screw holes and crevices to prevent rust or paint adhesion issues.

4. Prepare for Painting

Insert screws into a piece of cardboard with small holes so that the hardware stands upright. This makes it easier to achieve even spray paint coverage and keeps the hardware from sticking to any surfaces while drying.

5. Apply Spray Paint

Shake your spray paint can well and test it on the cardboard first. Once you’re satisfied with the spray pattern, apply a light, even coat across all hardware pieces. Allow the paint to dry for about an hour.

6. Add Additional Coats

For a smooth, durable finish, apply a second and third coat, letting each layer dry completely before adding the next. I often use Rust-Oleum or Krylon spray paints because they’re easy to use and give excellent coverage.

Pro tip: Don’t forget to spray the backs of the hardware pieces too for a completely finished look.

7. Let the Paint Cure

After the final coat, allow the hardware to dry for at least one hour before handling. For best results, let it cure for 24 hours before reattaching it to your furniture.
